Comic character
You all know Viz, the Geordie comic that stunned the media with
it's massive sales and genius break with convention, laying the foundation for
all the 'attitude glossies' of today. It's founder, Chris Donald was an each night
regular in the Trent, during the period when Viz went from a 'bedroom & staples'
enterprise to a 'boardroom & famous' thing. We gained great notoriety from
the fact that Chris hand drew all our publicity & posters for events we staged.
He also allowed us discounted, near-knuckle advertising, meaning that we travelled
to a large extent, in the wake of his success. Many was the Sunday morning when
the call would come for us to find photo love characters for the comic, which
we'd recruit from staff & any people kicking around the bar.
Perhaps this is why the Trent is often mistakenly complimented
as being the first bar to ever sell Viz comic, when the first bar was in fact
the old Strawberry (pre re-fit). A few years ago, in a national tourist guide
there was a 'celebrity 10 favourite things' page, chosen by Chris. In it he bigged
up the Trent & we thank him for that. Old skool flavour.
